EquiSpend
Privacy Policy
Last updated 26 September 2026
Draft — this text is being reviewed and may change before EquiSpend launches.
This policy explains what information EquiSpend collects, why, who can see it, and the choices you have. EquiSpend is made by MetricArc Studios and run by [Legal name of the owner] (“we”, “us”). We wrote it in plain language; if anything is unclear, email privacy@metricarc.in.
The short version
- EquiSpend records expenses. It never moves, holds or sends money.
- Your personal expenses are visible only to you. Shared expenses are visible only to the members of that group.
- We don’t sell your information and we don’t show ads.
- You can download your data or delete your account at any time from Me → Privacy & data.
What we collect
- Account details: your email address, name and, if you add them, your photo, mobile number and UPI ID. If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your name and email from them (Apple may give us a private relay email instead).
- What you record: expenses (amount, description, shop, category, date, notes), how they are split, payments you record between people, comments, budgets, recurring expenses and categories.
- Receipts: photos or PDFs of receipts you scan or upload, and the details read from them (shop, items, amounts, GST).
- Details about friends: when you add someone who isn’t on EquiSpend, you give us their name and, if you choose, their email address or mobile number. See “People you add” below.
- Payment screenshots you attach to a payment, and feedback you send us.
- Subscription status: whether you have Plus, which plan, and when it renews. Your card or UPI details are handled by Apple or Google; we never see them.
- Technical details: the type of phone (iPhone or Android), app version and, if you allow notifications, a notification token for your phone.
We don’t collect your location, your contacts list, or your bank or UPI account details, and we don’t read your SMS or payment apps.
Why we use it
- To run the app: save your expenses, work out who owes whom, show balances, insights and budgets, and keep your account secure.
- To read receipts you scan, so you don’t have to type them in.
- To send you notifications you’ve asked for, such as a new shared expense, a payment confirmation, a budget alert or your monthly summary. You can turn these off in Notification settings.
- To provide Plus, check your free scan limit and restore purchases.
- To answer your questions and fix problems you report.
- To keep the service safe and to meet legal obligations.
We use your information only for these purposes, based on your consent when you sign up and use each feature. We don’t use it for advertising or sell it to anyone.
Who can see your information
- Personal expenses, budgets, insights and your other groups: only you.
- Members of a group you belong to can see: the shared expenses in that group, the payments recorded in it, comments on them, the receipt attached to a shared expense, and your name, photo and UPI ID.
- Nobody else. These rules are enforced by the database itself, not only by the app.
When you invite or remind a friend by WhatsApp, SMS or email, the message is sent from your own phone using that app; we don’t send it for you.
People you add
If you add a friend who isn’t on EquiSpend, you confirm that you know them and that they would reasonably expect you to share their name and contact details with us so you can split costs together. We use those details only to show them in your group and, if they later sign up with the same email, to connect them to their share of the expenses. Anyone can ask us to remove their details by writing to us.
Services that help us run EquiSpend
We use a small number of trusted companies to provide the service. They may process your information only on our instructions and for these purposes:
- Supabase — stores the database, files and sign-in (servers in Mumbai, India).
- Anthropic — reads the receipts you scan or upload. The receipt image is sent to Anthropic for reading and is not used to train its models. This processing happens outside India.
- Apple and Google — app stores, Plus payments, and sign-in if you choose it.
- RevenueCat — keeps track of your Plus subscription status. It receives a random account code and purchase details — not your name, email or expenses.
- Expo — delivers app updates and notifications to your phone.
- An email provider — sends sign-in and password emails.
Some of these companies are outside India. When your information is processed outside India, we make sure it is protected as required by Indian law.
How long we keep it
We keep your information while you have an account. When you delete your account, we delete your profile, personal expenses, receipts, budgets, categories, settings and notifications.
Shared expenses and payments you were part of stay in their groups under the name “Former member”, because other members rely on them to keep their balances correct. Your name, email, photo and UPI ID are removed from them.
Copies in our backups are deleted automatically within [30] days. We may keep limited records for longer where the law requires it.
Your rights and choices
- See and correct: you can see and edit your details and everything you’ve recorded in the app at any time.
- Download: Me → Privacy & data → Download my data gives you your expenses and payments as spreadsheets.
- Delete: Me → Privacy & data → Delete my account. You can also withdraw your consent this way; the app can’t work without the information it needs.
- Notifications: choose which ones you get in Notification settings.
- Nominate: you can name someone to exercise these rights for you if you die or become unable to, by writing to us.
- Complain: contact our Grievance Officer (below). If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
Security
Information is encrypted while it travels between your phone and our servers. Files such as receipts and photos are private and shown only through short-lived links. Access rules in the database make sure each person sees only what they’re allowed to. You can also turn on App lock to require Face ID, fingerprint or your phone’s passcode.
No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affects your information, we will tell you and the authorities as the law requires.
Children
EquiSpend is for people aged 18 and over. We don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has an account, please tell us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we’ll tell you in the app before the change takes effect. The date at the top shows when it was last updated.
